Burning Bushes and curious conversations
The story of Moses and the Burning Bush is a common story from the Bible. We are familiar with the outcome of the story (God calls Moses to lead Israel out of slavery in Egypt), but I want to look into one specific verse that leads to this curious conversation.
"So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” - Exodus 3:3-4
Moses noticed the burning bush, but God did not speak to Moses until he walked over to the bush to see what was happening.
When I read this story as a child, I always assumed that God just yelled at Moses and said, “Hey! Come over here. I have a question for you!”. But the text informs us that Moses’ curiosity about why the bush was not being consumed by the fire led him to an encounter with God. God did not yell at him to come over, he waited to see if Moses would notice what was happening around him.

One of the key principles of this series is to
find where God is already working and join Him in that work. Moses looked around, saw a burning bush, and decided to “go over and see this strange site”. There was an incredible opportunity presented to Moses because he was curious and took the initiative to walk over and see what was happening. This conversation with God changed everything about Moses’ life; he left the encounter forever changed because he was curious.
You have a similar opportunity today. You can go throughout the day with your eyes open
looking for where God is working. Maybe it’s the kindness of a stranger, a conversation at a coffee shop, or an opportunity that might come up because you were walking around expecting to see something. Who knows, you just might have your own burning bush experience this week.
